And I highly doubt this person has actually read the Quran because let’s be real, 60% of it is Muhammad describing rules so the growing community of Muslims could sustain itself. The rest is poetry (actually pretty much all of it is poetry).
Every religion has extremists throughout different points in history. Most of them still do now. The fact that the youngest of these religions has a lot of extremism that is relatively geographically isolated should not be surprising to anyone.
Islam, like essentially every other mainstream religion, preaches tolerance and respect for other humans. Individuals inevitably corrupt that message to their own ends.
